            …..REFLECTING PEACE & JUSTICE

Our nation cannot afford a shrill and shallow debate that distorts reality and reduces the options to 'cut and run' versus 'stay the course.' Instead we need a forthright discussion that begins with an honest assessment of the situation in Iraq and acknowledges both the mistakes that have been made and the signs of hope that have appeared.... Our nation's military forces should remain in Iraq only as long as it takes for a responsible transition, leaving sooner rather than later."  ~ Bishop Thomas G. Wenski , U.S.C.C.B.

DIES IRAE 9/ 11

Adapted from Dies Irae

By: Joseph A. Volker, Ph.D.

September 11, 2005

Dies Irae, dies illa

Oh day of wrath, oh day of mourning

See fulfilled the prophets warning,

Heaven and earth in ashes burning

Death is struck and nature quaking

 Nothing of the towers remaining

Doomed to flames of woe unbounded.

Dies Irae, dies illa,

Day of infamy extolling,

sucidal planes exploding.

Shadow staining, flesh enflaming

Oh that day of tears and sorrow.

What shall I frail man be pleading,

Worthless are my prayers and sighing.

Oh what fear men’s hearts encountered

When from skies the planes descended.

Suicidal, lethal, deeds of hate,

Enfolding all in flames unended.

Fraught filled witness, Satan’s madness

Transfixed in time, life’s breath suspended.

Hopeful saints with hands upraised

Seek in vain the glimpse of saviors,

Priests, magicians, lords, technicians.

Horrid bound the falling towers

Through the anguished cries of woe,

Cries of death each floor bestows.

Faint and weary, refuge, solace

Rescued from the fires raging

Trek the bridges, streets and alleys.

Home entreating, safe secure

Nothing less than care filled love

Waiting at each family’s door.

Grim the reaper still he’s knocking,

Nations’ lust for power and war.

Future tense with resolution

Casts the spell of vengeance’ kneading.

Cain and Abel, madness reigning.

Iron hull of hate’s dark seething.

Who will save us from such madness?

Save us from secure solutions,

Preemptive war, a leader’s folly

Collat’ral damage, shock and awe.

Strife and conflict notwithstanding,

Such a peace, bleeds all the more.

David and the Sybil 'joining,

Not in armaments alluring

Not in gleaning wealth and power.

Still Death reigns, a nation's sorrow,

 Endless burning, insensate fire!

Trust and truth are yet betrayed

Stave the arsenal of madness

Conjure sanity and wisdom

War forsake, a nation’s pleading,

Racked in pain, unendless grieving.

Grant us Lord, your consolation,

Save us, Lord from conflagration.

Spare us terror, end all war

Oh, good Jesus, peace  restore!

Lay down your arms, embrace your child,

Forgive, repent but don’t forget.

AMEN!

Nothing positive comes from Iraq, torn apart by continual slaughter as the civil populations flees.  ~ Benedict XVI Easter Sunday 2007

But I say to you that listen, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. - Luke 6:27-30

"War destroys. And we must cry out for peace.
Peace sometimes gives the idea of stillness, but it is never stillness.
It is always an active peace.
I think that everyone must be committed in the matter of peace,
to do everything that they can,
what I can do from here.
Peace is the language we must speak."
Pope Francis
